Sergey Lavrov’s View as to Why Turkey Shot Down SU-24 Plane

Shooting the Su-24 down, Turkey may have tried to disrupt the talks on Syria taking place in the Vienna format. According to TASS, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this after his talks with Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulides.

According to Lavrov, the Turkish side must realize what it needs to do in this situation. “I think that everyone else understands the situation and understands what it is to be done in such cases,” he said. In accordance with business as usual principle, bilateral relations with Turkey can not be sustained, Lavrov said. Moscow sees Ankara’s decision to shoot down the Russian bomber as an action contrary to the “problem of fighting against terrorism.”

The head of the Foreign Ministry is ready to meet with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, “on the margins” at the meeting of Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the OSCE, to be held in Belgrade on December 3-4. He did not rule out that Cavusoglu would say something new in contrast with what the Turkish side has already stated publicly.

“I spoke with Turkey’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Cavusoglu on the next day after the violations of international law  took place and did not hear him say anything new in contrast to what the Turkish leadership has publicly stated, justifying its unacceptable criminal act,” Lavrov recalled. “Now the Turkish side urgently Requests to organize a full-time meeting with the Turkish foreign minister on the sidelines of the OSCE Ministerial Council in Belgrade. We will not shy away from this contact, we will listen to what Mr. Cavusoglu has to say. “
