23-year-old George Latsabidze cultivated giant blackberries without thorns in the village of Kisiskhevi at Telavi Region.
He has currently half a hectare of land where he is dealing with this business. A single grain of the blackberry weights on average 15 grams, whereas the root yield weights of 10 kg.
Thus, George plans blackberry export for the next year.
George studies at Telavi State University and in the faculty of agronomy. Last year he planted “triple crown” blackberry without any thorns and received his first harvest in this year.
According to him the giant blackberries without thorns enter before wild blackberry. Harvest begins in June and lasts until the end of August.
“This variety of blackberry is very sweet and aromatic. The average weight of a single grain weights 15 grams. The biggest grain reaches 20 grams. I have currently cultivated 1500 tress of blackberries on the half a hectare land. Totally we have received more than 7 tons of the harvest in this year. It is expected that in the next year, the Blackberry trees become fully productive”, – says George.
George sells his production on the local market. Where a kilogram of blackberry costs 4 GEL. In addition to this, George also sells the the sapling of the blackberry itself. The price of the single blackberry plant is 2 GEL.
