UNESCO designates Georgian pianist as Artist of peace

The Director-General of UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova will designate the famous Georgian pianist Elisso Bolkvadze as a UNESCO Artist for Peace on 22 January 2015. This title will be bestowed in recognition of her support, through her Foundation LYRA, for the musical education and creativity of talented young Georgians. In her capacity as a UNESCO Artist for Peace, Elisso Bolkvadze will be involved in Organization’s activities in the field of education of children in conflict-affected areas.
Born in Tbilissi in Elisso Bolkvadze’s formidable musical talent was recognized in early childhood. She gave her first concert with an orchestra at the age of seven and graduated from the Tbilissi Conservatory in 1995. She began her professional career in France and Austria, and has since performed in the most prestigious concert halls of Europe and the United States, accompanied by such renowned orchestras as the Orchestra of Saint Petersburg (Russian Federation), the Gulbenkian Foundation Orchestra (Portugal), the National Symphony Orchestra of Georgia and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio France.

Ms Bolkvadze has won several international prizes in Germany, Portugal and the United States. In 2012 she created the Lyra Foundation to help talented young Georgian musicians with their studies.
