Ski Resorts Extend Winter Season Until Mid May

Winter tourism season is expected to last until mid May at Georgian ski resorts in 2016.

This year tourist inflows are satisfactory, because in the New Year period all ski resorts were overcrowded, the head of the Ski Resorts Development Company told the Commersant radio station.

According to preliminary estimations, the months of February and March will be overloaded at hotels, Sandro Onoprishvili noted.

At the peak of the season water supply problems arose at the Gudauri ski resort, but the problem was settled and, according to the current report, the Gudauri ski resort has the excellent tourism season. The number of tourists has increased by 14% compared to the previous year. At the same time, the Kokhta ropeway inauguration has added big stimulus to Bakuriani resort and this factor has also increased the tourist inflows to the ski resort, Onoprisvhili said.

The tourists’ interest is growing in the Goderdzi Resort too and this factor outlines excellent perspective for this resort. Active negotiations are underway with the private sector to develop this zone. This season is expected to last until mid May and artificial snowing systems will be also applied if necessary, Onoprishvili added.

For the past 20 years, the earliest winter season started on December 5, 2015 at the Goderdzi Ski Resort.
