Driving Under Influence of Drugs to be Punished by Criminal Law from April 1

From April 1, 2019, driving under the influence of drugs, psychotropic or new psychoactive substances will be punished by criminal law, – the Ministry of Internal Affairs reports.

According to the amendments to the law, driving a vehicle under the influence of narcotic substance will be punished wither by a fine or imprisonment up to one year. The amendments also envisage deprivation of various rights, including deprivation of a driving license for a period of 3 years.

Police will be entitled to request drivers to undergo drug tests in case of existence of relevant grounds envisaged by the law.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, driving a car under the influence of narcotic substances is criminalized in many European countries, like France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Romania, Finland, Sweden and etc.
