Worldwide the price of milk is one of the most expensive in Georgia. This information was stated at “Radio Palitra” by Catherine Poberezhna, who is the representative of Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations.
According to her, there is a shortage of raw milk in Georgia, due to this the local market demand is not satisfied.
“Georgia is one the country where milk price is one of the highest throughout the world. There is a high demand on the market, however it remains unsatisfied, meaning that here is a deficit in raw milk. As a result the price is relative. Moreover, the dairy market in the country is naturally exceptional, because there are such specific traditional products such as Sulguni, Imeruli cheese, Matsoni, which cannot be imported from outside. Accordingly, to some extent, this traditional culture of consumption significantly protects the Georgian market”, – said Catherine Poberezhna.
She gives her suggestions on how the situation can be changed and improved. Firstly, she notes that the yield of milk should increase throughout the country.
“First of all, we should work in the way to improve the efficiency. The average yield of milk is 1300 liters per year, in some cases it is even less. For comparison, in Ukraine the same indicator on average is 4 400 liters”, – points out Catherine Poberezhna.
The deputy of the National Food Agency , Kakha Sokhadze announced that the main objective of the milk congress which takes place today, is to induce and support investments towards milk sector. There will be discussed the latest food safety standards and the awareness of modern technologies.
